Our Team
Shavonne Sams, CEO and Founder
Founded in 2016 by Shavonne, Truly Valued exemplifies her unwavering commitment to fostering positive transformation and well-being in her community. The organization prioritizes youth and families, focusing on character development, mentoring, and community engagement to promote both individual and communal growth.
As a devoted mother and grandmother, Shavonne brings extensive personal and professional experience to her role. With a master’s in management, a diploma in Christian Ministry, and a Life Coach Minister Certification, she effectively guides others in their development.
Shavonne enjoys reading, traveling, and spending quality time with her family and friends. Her mission centers on fostering self-love as a foundation for spreading positivity.
She actively engages with her community through Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Teamsters National Black Caucus, Booker Middle School’s School Advisory Council, and the Community Response Team. As a member of the Youth Empowerment Services (YES) Team, she collaborates with local organizations to support young people. Recently appointed as Assistant Director on the Board of Christian Education and Formation, she oversees curriculum development, events, and teacher support.
Her leadership demonstrates the profound impact of individuals driven by a genuine desire to make a difference.
Dr. Leslie Harrell, Community Engagement Manager
After overcoming significant challenges—including substance abuse, dropping out of high school, teenage motherhood, and surviving human trafficking—Leslie Harrell now inspires and uplifts others.
In 2005, she was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel, a pivotal moment in her spiritual journey. Leslie has received multiple awards for her community service, including the Congressional Award and the Inaugural Changemakers Award from Claremont Lincoln University.
Her academic achievements are impressive: she holds a doctorate in Strategic Leadership and a master’s in Peace and Social Justice from Regent University. She aims to serve as a leadership coach through Truly Valued and lead development initiatives within the African American community.
Additionally, Leslie is a certified Life Coach through Christian Leaders Institute and a certified facilitator for Truly Valued’s Nurturing Families Program, demonstrating her commitment to guiding others in their personal growth and empowerment.
Lucia Villalpando, Program Specialist
Lucia grew up in Manatee County, deeply influenced by the rich culture and values of her Mexican immigrant parents. From a young age, she developed a passion for community service and engagement. After graduating from high school, Lucia moved to Fort Myers, Florida, to pursue her bachelor’s degree. While studying, she not only engaged actively with students and families through the Lee County School District; she also took on various volunteer roles.
After graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University, Lucia returned to Manatee County and began her work with the Manatee County Library. There, she created and led programs, classes, and events designed to enhance access for all community members. Her initiatives arise from a keen awareness of the institutional and societal barriers that limit access to essential resources and opportunities for underserved populations.
Guided by her commitment to raising awareness and fostering critical consciousness, Lucia believes in the community’s power to drive meaningful change. She empowers families, children, and communities, using her experiences to create collaborative solutions that nurture love, creativity, and resilience. Additionally, Lucia serves as a certified English and Spanish facilitator for Truly Valued’s Nurturing Families Program.
